Description
What Is Adaferin Gel
Adaferin gel is a topical retinoid gel made by Galderma. The active ingredient is adapalene 0.1%, which belongs to the retinoid drug class. Retinoids are a group of compounds derived from Vitamin A. The gel is applied directly to the skin.
Adapalene 0.1 is the strength found in Adaferin gel. The gel base suits oily and combination skin types well. It is a prescription-grade retinoid used widely in dermatology.
What It Treats
Adaferin gel is used for acne vulgaris — the common type of acne that includes blackheads, whiteheads, and inflamed pimples. It is also used where post-acne pigmentation is the main concern. The gel helps fade the uneven tone left behind after breakouts clear.
Some users ask about adapalene for wrinkles. There are researches that supports its use for fine lines and surface texture. A doctor can tell you whether your specific concern fits this treatment.
How It Works
Adapalene works by binding to specific receptors in skin cells. These receptors control how cells grow and shed. This normalises the skin cell turnover cycle, so pores stay clear because dead cells do not clump together and block them.
Fewer blocked pores means fewer conditions for acne-causing bacteria to thrive. Over time, the skin surface becomes smoother and more even. Faster cell turnover also pushes pigmented cells out sooner, which is why it helps with dark spots.
Side Effects
Side effects are common during the first four to six weeks as skin adjusts. They reduce significantly after that period.
Common side effects:
- Dryness and flaking of the skin
- Redness at the application site
- Mild burning or stinging after application
- Increased sun sensitivity
If severe swelling or difficulty breathing occurs, seek emergency help without delay.
How to Use Adaferin Gel
Wash your face with a mild cleanser and pat it dry before applying. Apply a thin layer of Adaferin gel 0.1 to the affected areas once every night before bed. Use just a pea-sized amount. Avoid the corners of your eyes, nostrils, and lips as these areas are too sensitive for the gel.
Do not apply it to broken or sunburned skin. After applying, wait for it to absorb before using any moisturiser on top. Adapalene makes your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Apply SPF every morning without skipping.
Most beginners over-apply on their first use. Less product applied consistently gives better results than a heavy layer used occasionally.
Missed Dose and Overdose
If you miss a night, skip it and apply the next evening as usual. Do not apply twice to make up for the missed dose. Doubling up will irritate the skin badly.
Applying more than the directed amount does not speed up results. It increases redness and peeling causing increased irritation. If you experience severe burning or swelling after accidental overuse, rinse the area with water and contact your doctor.
Who Should Avoid It
Do not use Adaferin gel if you have eczema or seborrheic dermatitis on your face. Adapalene will worsen these conditions. Avoid using it alongside strong exfoliants, benzoyl peroxide, or salicylic acid without a dermatologist's guidance. Combining them increases irritation sharply.
Pregnant women should avoid retinoids. This includes topical adapalene. Systemic absorption is low but it is still a precaution worth taking. Breastfeeding women should also check with a doctor before using it.
Galderma does not recommend this gel for children under twelve years of age. If you have sensitive skin or an existing skin condition, consult a doctor before starting.
Price and Availability
Adaferin gel is available at fertimeds. Store the tube in a cool, dry place away from direct heat or sunlight. Heat can degrade the gel over time.
Adapalene gel 0.1 is available by prescription in most countries. If you are new to retinoids, starting every other night for the first two weeks helps your skin adjust without excessive dryness.
