Latanoprost 0.005% eye drop
Product Information
Description
What Is Latanoprost 0.005% Eye Drop
Latanoprost 0.005 eye drop is a prescription ophthalmic solution. The active ingredient is latanoprost at a concentration of 0.005%. It is manufactured by Zydus. Each drop delivers a precise dose directly to the eye surface.
Mild stinging on application is normal. It settles within seconds and is not a sign of a problem.
What Condition It Treats
Latanoprost 0.005% eye drop is used to reduce elevated intraocular pressure. This is the pressure inside the eye. It treats open-angle glaucoma and a condition called ocular hypertension. Both conditions can damage the optic nerve if pressure is not controlled. Left untreated, that damage leads to gradual vision loss.
It does not restore vision already lost. It works to prevent further damage by keeping pressure within a safe range. Consistent daily use is what makes it effective.
How It Works
Latanoprost belongs to a drug class called prostaglandin analogues. It increases the outflow of fluid inside the eye, known as aqueous humor. More fluid draining out means less pressure building up. The drug does not reduce how much fluid is produced. It overall improves how much drains away.
This is why it works as a once-daily treatment. With correct evening dosing, the pressure-lowering effect carries through the night and into the next day.
Side Effects
Side effects with latanoprost 0.005 eye drop range from mild and common to less frequent but more serious.
Common:
- Mild stinging or burning on application
- Blurred vision for a few minutes after the drop
- Redness of the eye
- Gradual darkening of the iris (permanent in some patients)
- Increased growth or darkening of eyelashes
Less common:
- Eyelid skin darkening
- Dry eyes or watery eyes
- Sensitivity to light
The iris colour change is worth knowing about before starting treatment. It is a known effect of prostaglandin analogues. It is more common in eyes with mixed colouring and does not affect vision, but it is usually permanent. An eye care professional can tell you whether this is a concern for your specific situation.
How to Use Latanoprost 0.005 Eye Drop
Apply one drop into the affected eye once daily. Take it in the evening or at night — this is not optional. Latanoprost works with the eye's natural pressure cycle. Evening application gives the best pressure-lowering effect over the following hours. Timing matters here.
Wash your hands before applying the drop. Tilt your head back and pull the lower eyelid down gently. Place one drop into the pocket formed. Close your eye for one to two minutes after applying. Do not blink excessively or squeeze the eyelid. This pushes the drop out before it absorbs.
If you wear contact lenses, remove them before putting in the drop. Wait at least 15 minutes before putting the lenses back in. One drop per eye, once at night. That is the full dose. Do not apply more thinking it will work faster.
Missed Dose and Overdose
If you miss the evening dose and remember the same night, apply it. If you only remember the next morning, skip it. Continue that evening as normal. Do not apply two drops to make up for the one you missed.
Overdose with eye drops is uncommon. Applying extra drops can cause eye irritation, redness, and may slightly increase systemic absorption. If you feel unwell after applying more than prescribed, speak to a doctor. Do not dismiss chest discomfort or breathing changes after excess use.
Who Should Avoid It
Do not use this product if you are allergic to latanoprost or to any component of the solution. Use it with caution during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
You may speak to a doctor before using it in either case. People with a history of certain eye conditions like uveitis or macular oedema should use it only under close medical supervision.
Do not use latanoprost while wearing contact lenses without removing them first. The solution contains preservatives that can be absorbed by soft lenses.
