Lumigan 0.01% Eye Drop
Product Information
Description
High pressure inside the eye is a serious problem. Left untreated, it can damage the optic nerve and cause permanent vision loss. Lumigan 0.01% eye drop helps lower this pressure in adults with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. Getting it under control early is what protects your vision.
What Is Lumigan 0.01%
Lumigan 0.01% is a prescription eye drop made by Allergan. The active ingredient is bimatoprost 0.01%, which is a prostaglandin analogue. It is one of the most commonly prescribed drops for high eye pressure. Doctors also use it when other treatments have not worked well enough.
How It Works
The eye constantly produces a fluid called aqueous humor. When that fluid cannot drain properly, pressure builds up inside the eye. Bimatoprost opens the drainage pathways so more fluid can exit. Lower fluid volume means lower pressure on the optic nerve.
It works with the eye's own drainage system. It does not suppress fluid production, it helps move fluid out.
How to Use It
Apply one drop into the affected eye or eyes once daily. Evening application is what most doctors recommend. Do not apply more than once per day. More frequent use can actually reduce how well it works.
Tilt your head back and pull down the lower eyelid. Place the drop inside, then keep your eyes closed for one to two minutes. This helps the drop absorb properly.
The bottle tip should never touch the eye or any surface. This prevents contamination. Store the bottle at room temperature, away from direct light, and keep it capped when not in use.
Side Effects
Lumigan 0.01% can cause side effects in some patients. Minor ones are common and usually settle on their own.
Common side effects:
- Mild redness of the eye
- Itching or irritation after application
- A feeling of something in the eye
- Blurred vision immediately after the drop
- Increased eyelash growth or darkening
Less common but more serious:
- Darkening of the iris (permanent in some cases)
- Eye pain that does not go away
- Inflammation inside the eye
If you notice sudden vision changes or severe eye pain, get medical attention right away. Do not wait to see if it settles.
Who Should Not Use This Drop
Not everyone is suitable for Lumigan 0.01%. Tell your doctor if you have active eye infections, uveitis, or a history of eye inflammation before you start.
People who wear contact lenses should remove them before applying the drop. Wait at least fifteen minutes before putting lenses back in. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should ask a doctor before using bimatoprost. It is not approved for children.
Do not use this drop alongside another prostaglandin eye drop. Using two drops from the same drug class does not add benefit. It may cause harm. An eye care professional should guide all decisions about starting or stopping this treatment.
Dosage Summary
- Your doctor may prescribe it for one eye or both depending on your condition.
- Keeping pressure stable requires consistent use, so try not to skip doses.
