Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion
Product Information
Description
What is Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion?
Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion is a prescription eye drop made by Allergan. It contains cyclosporine 0.05% as its active ingredient. The emulsion form helps deliver the medication directly to the eye surface. It is not a regular eye drops. These are a white, oil-in-water emulsion.
What is it used for?
Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion 0.05% is used for chronic dry eye disease. It is used when the eye is not producing enough tears due to inflammation. This condition is known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca. It does not provide instant lubrication like artificial tears. It works on the underlying cause over time.
How does it work?
Cyclosporine 0.05% blocks the immune response that damages tear-producing cells in the eye. When inflammation goes down, the eye can produce its own natural tears again. It does not replace tears. It helps restore the eye's own ability to make them.
Most patients see improvement after using it consistently for three to six months.
In what strengths is it available?
Restasis Ophthalmic Emulsion is available in a 0.05% concentration. Each single-use vial contains 0.4 ml of the emulsion. The vials are preservative-free and meant for one-time use only. Both eyes can be treated from a single vial if needed. Do not save the remaining emulsion after use.
The single-use format is not wasteful. The preservative-free design protects eye tissue during long-term use.
How to take it / dosage steps
Use Restasis in both eyes twice a day, every day. Space the doses about twelve hours apart. Before using, turn the vial upside down and shake it gently a few times. This mixes the emulsion evenly. Tilt your head back, pull the lower eyelid down, and put in one drop. Close the eye gently for one to two minutes after applying.
If you wear contact lenses, take them out before use. Wait at least fifteen minutes before putting lenses back in. Do not touch the tip of the vial to your eye or any surface. One vial per eye session is enough. Throw away any remaining emulsion right after use.
What are the side effects?
Side effects can happen, especially in the first few weeks. Most are mild and reduce over time.
Common side effects:
- Burning or stinging after application
- Eye redness
- Discharge from the eye
- Blurred vision shortly after applying
- Watery eyes or increased tearing
Less common but more serious side effects:
- Eye pain that does not go away
- Severe irritation or swelling of the eye
- Signs of eye infection such as increasing redness, discharge, or sensitivity to light
Stop using the emulsion and see a doctor if you get sudden vision changes or severe eye pain. Any side effects that go on past the first few weeks should be checked by a doctor.
Who should not take it?
Restasis 0.05% is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it if you have an active eye infection of any kind. People with a known allergy to cyclosporine or any ingredient in the emulsion should not use it.
It is not used for dry eye caused by contact lens wear alone. It has not been studied in children under sixteen years of age. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should talk to a doctor before starting. If you are using other eye drops, ask your doctor whether they can be used together. Restasis requires a prescription. Do not use it without a prescriber's guidance.
