Description

What is Acivir Cream 5%?

Acivir cream 5% is a topical antiviral cream made by Cipla. The active ingredient is acyclovir 5%, which targets viral infections on the skin directly. It is not a systemic tablet, it works only where you apply it.

What is it used for?

Acivir cream acyclovir is used to treat cold sores and herpes simplex virus infections on the skin. It helps reduce how long outbreaks last and eases symptoms like tingling, burning, and blistering. Applied early, it cuts healing time. It is also used for recurrent labial herpes in adults and adolescents.

How does it work?

Acyclovir works by blocking a viral enzyme the herpes simplex virus needs to copy its DNA. Without that copying process, the virus cannot spread to healthy skin cells. The infection slows. The body then clears it faster. This is why acyclovir has been a frontline antiviral for decades.

In what strengths is it available?

Acivir cream 5 contains acyclovir at a 5% concentration. Each tube contains 5 gm of cream.

How to take it?

Clean and dry the affected area before applying. Use a clean fingertip or cotton swab to apply a small amount of cream directly to the sore or blister. Apply five times daily, roughly every four hours, and skip the overnight dose.

Do this for five days or as your doctor has directed. Apply the cream on affected skin part including blisters.

What are the side effects?

Side effects from acivir cream acyclovir are usually mild. Absorption through the skin is low, so most reactions stay local. Common ones include:

  • Mild burning or stinging at the application site
  • Itching or dryness around the treated area
  • Temporary redness or flaking of skin

If you notice severe swelling, difficulty breathing, or signs of a serious skin reaction, get medical help right away. These are rare but need prompt care. Talk to your doctor if side effects worsen or do not go away after a few days.

Who should not take it?

Do not use this cream if you are allergic to acyclovir or any related antiviral. It is not for use near the eyes or inside the mouth. Do not apply it to mucous membranes.

Pregnant or breastfeeding women should speak to a doctor before use. Anyone with a known sensitivity to any ingredient in the cream should also avoid it.

Store the tube below 25°C and keep it away from direct sunlight. Heat can affect the consistency and potency of the cream, so do not leave it in a hot car or near a window.
