Description

What is thyroxine 75?

Thyroxine 75 is a tablet containing thyroxine sodium 75 mcg as its active ingredient. It is a synthetic thyroid hormone used to replace or supplement the thyroid hormone your body makes naturally. Abbott manufactures this tablet. It belongs to the thyroid hormone replacement drug category.

What is thyroxine 75 used for?

Thyroxine 75 is used for hypothyroidism — a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormone on its own. It is also used after thyroid surgery or radioactive iodine treatment, when the gland can no longer function normally.

Some patients take it to suppress TSH levels in thyroid cancer management. It covers both replacement and suppression needs in one tablet.

How does it work?

Thyroxine sodium replaces the T4 hormone that a healthy thyroid gland would normally release. Once absorbed, the body converts it into triiodothyronine. That is the active form which regulates metabolism, heart rate, body temperature, and energy levels.

Low thyroid hormone causes sluggishness, weight gain, and fatigue. This tablet helps bring those functions back toward normal.

In what strengths is it available?

This tablet is available in the 75 mcg strength. It sits in the mid-range of the thyroxine dose ladder. This makes it a common maintenance dose for adults titrated up from lower starting doses.

Your doctor will decide the right strength based on blood test results. Dose adjustments are made gradually over weeks.

How to take it / dosage

Take thyroxine 75 on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before breakfast. Food and certain supplements reduce how much the tablet absorbs. Take it at the same time every day.

Never miss a dose. If you do miss one, take it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed one and carry on. Do not double up.

Calcium supplements, antacids, and iron tablets should be taken at least four hours apart from thyroxine. Absorption is one of the most common points of confusion with this drug. Consistency matters more than timing alone.

Store the tablets at room temperature, away from moisture and direct light. Keep the blister pack sealed until use.

What are the side effects?

Even though thyroxine 75 is a hormone replacement, side effects can occur, especially if the dose is too high. These can't be ignored:

  • Palpitations or fast heartbeat
  • Headache
  • Nervousness or anxiety
  • Sweating more than usual
  • Weight loss
  • Diarrhoea
  • Insomnia
  • Muscle weakness
  • Irregular heartbeat at higher doses

Most mild effects settle once the dose is correctly adjusted. If chest pain or severe palpitations occur, contact a doctor without delay.

Who should not take it?

Thyroxine 75 is not suitable for everyone. People with untreated adrenal gland problems should not take it before those conditions are addressed. Patients with heart disease should use it with caution, as thyroxine increases metabolic demand on the heart.

Those with hyperthyroidism should not take this tablet. Patients with acute myocardial infarction should also avoid it.

Tell your doctor about any blood thinners, antidepressants, or diabetes medications you are taking. Thyroxine interacts with several of these drug classes. Dosing should be guided by your thyroid function test results.
