Rybelsus 3 mg tablet
Description
What is Rybelsus 3 mg tablet?
Rybelsus 3 mg tablet is an oral diabetes medication. The active ingredient is semaglutide. It belongs to a drug class called GLP-1 receptor agonists. This is the only GLP-1 medication available as a tablet rather than an injection. The 3 mg strength is the starting dose, used to help the body adjust before moving to a higher maintenance dose.
What is it used for?
Rybelsus 3 mg tablet is used for type 2 diabetes in adults. It helps control blood sugar levels alongside diet and exercise. It is not used for type 1 diabetes. It does not replace insulin in patients who need it.
How does it work?
Semaglutide works by activating GLP-1 receptors in the body. This stimulates insulin release when blood sugar is high. It also slows how quickly food leaves the stomach. Many patients find it reduces appetite too. The result is better blood sugar control after meals and through the day.
What strengths is it available in?
Rybelsus comes in three strengths: 3 mg, 7 mg, and 14 mg. The 3 mg dose is not a therapeutic dose on its own. It is taken for the first 30 days only, to improve body acceptance to the semaglutide (GLP-1). After that, most patients move to 7 mg or 14 mg as directed by their doctor.
How to take it
Take Rybelsus 3 mg on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning. Swallow it whole with no more than 120 ml of plain water. Do not crush or split the tablet.
Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other medications. Food affects how this tablet is absorbed — quite significantly. If you miss a dose, skip it and take the next one the following morning as usual.
Store tablets at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep them in the original packaging until use.
What are the side effects?
Common side effects include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Stomach pain
- Reduced appetite
- Constipation
These are most common when starting the medication. They often improve after a few weeks.
More serious effects are less frequent. These include pancreatitis, changes in vision related to diabetic eye disease, and low blood sugar when combined with other diabetes drugs. If you get severe and persistent stomach pain spreading to your back, seek emergency care. This can be a sign of pancreatitis.
Who should not take it?
Do not take Rybelsus 3 mg tablet if you:
- Have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma
- Have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2
- Are allergic to semaglutide or any ingredient in the tablet
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis
Patients with a history of pancreatitis should discuss the risk with their doctor before starting. Talk to your doctor before use to confirm this medication is right for you.
