Efavirenz Emtricitabine Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate Tablets
Efavirenz Emtricitabine Tenofovir Disoproxil FumarateAbout this product
What Are Efavirenz Emtricitabine Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate Tablets?
This is a fixed-dose combination tablet containing three active ingredients: efavirenz, emtricitabine, and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate. All three work against HIV. The tablet brings them together so a person takes one product instead of three separate drugs.
Efavirenz is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor. Emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate both belong to the nucleoside/nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor class. It is same drug class, different compounds. Together they cover the virus from two angles at once. That is the reason doctors use this as part of standard HIV treatment in adults.
What Condition Does This Triple Combination Treat?
This tablet treats HIV-1 infection in adults. It is used as part of antiretroviral therapy to control the virus in the body. The goal is to lower the amount of HIV in the blood to levels that are undetectable on standard tests. This reduces the risk of HIV-related illness and limits transmission risk.
It does not cure HIV. It controls it.
How Efavirenz Emtricitabine Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate Works Against HIV
HIV copies itself inside human cells using an enzyme called reverse transcriptase. Without that enzyme, the virus cannot replicate. All three active ingredients block this enzyme, each in a different way.
Efavirenz attaches directly to reverse transcriptase and shuts it down. Emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate are taken up by the cell. The body then converts them into their working forms. Those forms get inserted into the viral DNA chain and stop it from completing. The virus runs out of working copies. Viral load in the blood drops as a result.
Three blocking mechanisms in one tablet. That makes resistance harder to develop.
Unwanted Effects to Know About
Side effects vary between people. Some settle within the first few weeks. Others need medical attention.
Common side effects that often pass on their own:
- Dizziness
- Unusual dreams or difficulty sleepin
- Nausea
- Headache
- Skin rash
Serious side effects that need a doctor immediately:
- Lactic acid build-up in the blood
- Liver problems
- Severe skin reaction with blistering, peeling, or sores inside the mouth
- Mood changes, thoughts of self-harm, or depression
- Kidney problems
People with existing liver disease should tell their doctor before starting this medication. Certain liver conditions require close monitoring before use.
Other Antiretrovirals That Work Differently
These are not direct replacements. Each has a different profile and is prescribed based on the person's case:
- Tenofovir alafenamide / emtricitabine / bictegravir: an integrase inhibitor combination. Fewer kidney-related side effects than tenofovir disoproxil fumarate in some people.
- Lamivudine / zidovudine: an older two-drug nucleoside combination. Prescribed when a third agent is added separately.
- Dolutegravir / abacavir / lamivudine: integrase-based triple combination. An option for people who cannot use tenofovir disoproxil fumarate.
- Rilpivirine / emtricitabine / tenofovir disoproxil fumarate: replaces efavirenz with rilpivirine. Lower rate of central nervous system side effects.
- Lopinavir / ritonavir: a protease inhibitor combination. Used in specific treatment plans or where resistance to reverse transcriptase inhibitors is confirmed.
Your doctor selects based on resistance testing, other conditions, and what drugs you are already taking.
